CHAPTER 18

This time, I parked right in front of the chapel of Moore Memorial Gardens. The cemetery had seen its first burial in the early 1900s. It wasn’t directly related to any religion now, but older portions had definitely been of the protestant variety.

The summer heat was worse today and sweat poured from me almost as soon as I opened the door of my rental, a Kia sub-compact this time. I left off my duster, but I was otherwise armed for bear, or for zombie as the case may be. The pistol and dagger rode on my hips for all the world to see, and I carried the shotgun in a quarter-arms position. I hoped that I wouldn’t be stopped or spotted, but I had to balance which chances I was willing to take. Getting caught with my pants down was not one. Neither was leaving Brigit alone for a single second longer than necessary.

I decided on Moore because it was the only place I knew of that had seen a full zombie outbreak except for the accident on I-35. That had to mean something, even if I didn’t know what, yet.

I walked the graveyard looking for I-didn’t-know-what for about an hour. The sun climbed almost as fast as the temperature. Even the birds and squirrels had taken to the shelter of what shade was available.

After some aimless wandering, I decided to take a more methodical approach. I started where I was and walked in a rough spiral. I found what I was looking for on the fourth loop.

A cool tingle on my skin told me I was close to Holy Ground again. I looked and saw that I was in the middle of the oldest set of graves. These were so old and the headstones so weathered, it was often hard to tell which side of the stone was the grave. That made it a little harder than normal to avoid walking on the resting places of the dead, but I managed with a little care and caution.

Finding the holy ground was only part of what I needed. I had no way to call the guardian spirit, the Church Grim, to me. Even if I did, the likelihood of it responding during broad daylight was pretty slim. So, I started a new spiral, this one moving away from the holy ground.

With the old graves as my baseline, I paid close attention to all the graves around me. We hadn’t found any commonality the other night, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t any.

Soon enough, I found my first zombie grave. The hole still sat, a gaping wound in the peaceful earth. The shredded remains of the coffin lay in the bottom, crumbling quickly now that it was exposed to the elements. I got close, and the cool tingle left my skin. I got closer, and my gut tried to climb out of my mouth. My stomach muscles clenched and spasmed, and the scent of decay filled my nose.

Desecrated ground. This wasn’t any grave.
